Lowther Hall

Architect: Lawson and Grey 1890

North | N06

Building Description

Lowther Hall, a monumental colonnaded Corinthian Classic Revival mansion is standing in reduced grounds in Leslie Road, Essendon. It was originally called Earlsbrae Hall and erected in 1890 for wealthy Melbourne brewer Collier McCracken. For many years it was the residence of celebrated eccentric and Coles’ Book Arcade founder EW Cole. With impressive Corinthian colonnade and classical detail, the mansion is a unique Classic Revival design in Victoria and the finest of the few documented works of architects Lawson and Grey. The structure is notable for the high quality of materials and finishes and the elaborate and well-crafted interior spaces. Now it is the home of Lowther Hall Anglican Grammar School, an Independent K-12 school for girls.
