Bates Smart 2021
Located in the former and heritage-listed Equity Chambers building dating back to 1931, Hilton Melbourne Little Queen Street's reimagining by architecture and design studio Bates Smart respects the building’s old world-charm and restores its original features, injecting new life into a treasured city landmark. The original Equity Trustees Company building was designed by architects Oakley and Parkes in 1931.
Bates Smart’s inspiration for the hotel came directly from the heritage building and the era in which it was constructed. The design references the glamour and luxury of the 1930s—the golden age of travel and the Art Deco movement. Working with heritage consultant Lovell Chen, many of the original details such as coffered ceilings, ornate plasterwork, columns and carved timber features, including banisters, ornamental post box and fire alarm, have been restored and beautifully integrated within the sophisticated contemporary design
Guests will have the opportunity to join one of Bates Smart Principal Designers on a guided tour of the hotel. The hotel history tour is open to all guests and reveals the colourful past and significance of the site over the course of a short walk around the public spaces in the hotel via digital QR codes. There are eight QR codes on the tour, which when scanned using a mobile device reveal the building’s secrets.
After the tour, guests are invited to the hotel’s opulent art deco-themed lounge The Douglas Club to enjoy a beverage.
