St Kilda Underground Music walking tour + exhibition

Add to Itinerary

Throughout the 1970s, a resurgent bohemian culture developed in St Kilda. Artists, students, musicians, writers and film makers were drawn to the suburb by affordable rents and an eclectic mix of residents. By the 1980s, St Kilda had become synonymous with the underground music scene and experimental, independent artistic practice.

Recognition by Council of the growing creative community inspired a dynamic artistic program established through activities associated with the inaugural St Kilda Festival in 1980.

Celebrating St Kilda’s status as Victoria’s first Live Music Precinct.

What's On

Join Melynda von Wayward and Rob Wellington on a walking tour to explore St Kilda’s iconic music venues from the Palais Theatre to The George Hotel in Fitzroy Street. Hear about the bands, promoters, fashion, and artists involved in a significant decade of Australian music history from 1977 to 1987.

Follow the tour with a visit to _St Kilda's Alright! Art and artists in the 1980s _at the Carlisle Street Art Space in St Kilda Town Hall. The exhibition features a selection of works collected by Council at this time from artist’s living and working in St Kilda, including Jenny Bannister, Howard Arkely, Jenny Watson, John Cattapan, Mirka Mora, Tony Clark and more.

Please note: the walking tour and exhibition both finish at 4pm, so tour participants be sure to check out the exhibition prior!
