Melbourne Connect and the University of Melbourne Student Precinct Public Space Tour

Add to Itinerary

ASPECT Studios with GLAS Landscape Architects 2022

Description

Melbourne Connect and the University of Melbourne Student Precinct are two recently-designed adjacent public and educational precincts in inner Melbourne. This walking tour will take in the public realm of both projects.

Melbourne Connect is a purpose-built innovation precinct produced in partnership by the University of Melbourne, connecting researchers and students with government, industry, start-ups, artists and the nearby Science Gallery Melbourne. The public realm consists of three laneways and a central courtyard. The main point of interest is the vertical green living louvres, which bring greenery into the elevated courtyard, and help with wind mitigation.

The University of Melbourne Student Precinct is a revitalised precinct bringing together student services, entertainment and educational facilities. The Student Precinct was co-designed between university students, staff, First Nations representatives and a collaboration of landscape and architecture studios. Key points of interest include a new urban topography and pavement design inspired by First Nations stories of the eels and waterways of Melbourne.

Seeing both of these projects together provides an opportunity to see how educational and public realm design can address current cultural and urban issues.

What's On

This event will involve a group walk through Melbourne Connect and the Student Precinct’s publicly accessible spaces. Join the landscape architects of these spaces, ASPECT Studios and GLAS Landscape Architects, to learn about the ideas, process, construction and usage of the designs.
