Waterfront: Slipway Salon – Talks Program

A series of design and creative-entrepreneurship discussions and workshops at the historic Slipway Sheds.

 

Morning Session

10.00am: Welcome

Welcome with Cr Mendy Urie, Mayor East Gippsland Shire Council. Introduction by Fleur Watson, Excecutive Director and Chief Curator, Centre for Architecture Victoria | Open House Melbourne.

A series of design and creative-entrepreneurship discussions at the historic Slipway Sheds.

10.30am: Designing Bathing Culture

Hear from leading commentators from the bathing and design sector in Deep Dive into Hot Springs. Charles Davidson – Founder, Peninsula Hot Springs – will discuss global bathing culture and World Bathing Day in collaboration with Matt Sykes who will present the research behind the Great Victorian Bathing Trail.

11.00am: Creating Metung Hot Springs

Chris Stanley of Splinter Society Architects, discusses the design and sustainable principles behind the design of the new Metung Hot Springs project.

11.30am: Rethinking Regional Recovery

Nikhila Madabhushi, architect and lecturer, focussing on rethinking ‘community-led’ recovery of built environments in the regional Victorian context following the bushfires in East Gippsland / Gunaikurnai-Bidwell Country.

12.00pm: Design Week – Panel Discussion 1

Timothy Moore – curator of Melbourne Design Week – to lead panel discussion with all presenters from morning session.

Afternoon Session

Fleur Watson to introduce Bec Cole as moderator for afternoon. Bec Cole is Director, Creative Arts, LaTrobe City Council and Director of Latrobe Regional Gallery and Latrobe Performing Arts

1.00pm: Spotlighting Seaweed

Listen to Bec Cole in discussion with Mathew Bate, journalist, author of children’s seaweed book With A Little Kelp from Our Friends, recently published by Thames & Hudson.

1.30pm: Creating Eco-tourists

Hear from Andrea Lane and Lichen Kelp as they discuss their collaborative project called the School for unTourists.

2.00pm: Designing Gippslandia

John Calabro – a founder of Gippslandia quarterly newspaper presents the story behind this community, non-profit publication.

2.30pm: Brewing ideas

Uncle Noel Butler, Chris and Gabrielle Moore from Sailors Grave Brewing discussing the design process of their collaborative brews.

3.00pm: Design Week – Panel Discussion 2

Bec Cole to lead panel discussion with all presenters from afternoon session.

This event is co-presented by School for unTourists. Waterfront is proudly presented by Centre for Architecture Victoria | Open House Melbourne, in partnership with Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and East Gippsland Shire Council. Waterfront is part of Melbourne Design Week 2021, an initiative of the Victorian Government in collaboration with the NGV.
