St Faith’s Anglican Church, Burwood

Mockridge, Stahle and Mitchell 1958

Description

St Faith’s Anglican Church is of architectural significance as a highly innovative ecclesiastical design and one of the first truly modern church buildings in Victoria. It is of aesthetic significance for its simple, boldly lit interior and its stained glass, furniture and fittings which were designed by the architects of the church.

The church was designed to have a dark interior, penetrated by shafts of light from the central lantern and round skylights in the sanctuary.

What's On

There has been a church on this site serving the local community since 1892. The current heritage-listed church was dedicated in 1958.

It will be open for self-guided tours. A unique archival video of the church building running on a loop as well as extensive archival materials, including the initial and final plans for the site, will be displayed. The vicar and others will be available to explain historical and community contexts. The inclusion of the church on the Heritage Victoria register acknowledges its innovative mid-century modernism—still relevant today—that responded to post-war expectations of communities of the 1950s. The church can easily accommodate at least 50 people on self-guided tours.

Children's Activities
