Woodlands Historic Homestead

Peter Thompson 1843

Description

Woodlands Homestead, located at Woodlands Historic Park, is a unique and treasured part of Victoria’s heritage. A kit home manufactured in London by Peter Thompson and brought to Australia by William Pomeroy Green when he emigrated with his family in 1843, the homestead and associated outbuildings still retain many of the original features from this time.

The homestead is one of 107 early prefabricated buildings across Australia that are currently undergoing a joint application for listing on the World Heritage register. It is the only known example of the work of English prefabricated builder Thompson in Australia.

What's On

Woodlands Historic Homestead is an 1840s prefabricated kit home that has undergone some updates over time, including a California Bungalow façade update in the 1920s. There is also an extensive range of outbuildings to explore and enjoy.

This year's tours will highlight features of the homestead associated with it being a prefabricated building. The guided tour will head through the homestead and outbuildings, pointing out features that reflect the homestead's journey through time, from the 1840s wall to the blacksmith shop with supposed links to Ned Kelly's armour.
