Miners’ Cottage
Architect: e+ architecture, 2017
Building Description
Located close to central Bendigo and many key services, one of the main drivers for the owners in developing the site was the view to this being their ‘forever’ house, rather than a stepping stone to something bigger and ‘better’. Stage 1 involved the basic renovation of the interior, ensuring the ‘bones’ were in good health. More recently, Stage 2 has been completed. This involved reconfiguration of internal spaces and a modest extension providing more living space, improved connection to the garden and improved natural light.
With a heritage overlay to the property, and an increased awareness of the importance of Miners’ cottages to Bendigo’s urban fabric, a sensitive but modern approach was needed. Through references to cottage proportions, geometry and materials, the new extension sits comfortably within its context.
This project demonstrates how, if we are willing to take a long-term view in our approach to housing, what may seem out of reach (for financial or other reasons) can be achieved through clever design and planning. Stage 3 is anticipated to be completed within the next three years.
