The Lyon Housemuseum is a unique hybrid combination of private residence and museum, showcasing works of contemporary Australian art from the Lyon Collection. Highly experimental, its architectural form and spatial design challenge the relationship between public and private space, while re-imagining conventional ideas about art and architecture.
The Lyon Housemuseum was established by Corbett Lyon and Yueji Lyon in 2009, and has since welcomed visitors from around the world. The Lyon Housemuseum, designed by award-winning architect Corbett Lyon, is a unique, hybrid combination of private residence and museum, the first purpose-designed building of its type internationally.
Throughout the living spaces of the Housemuseum, works from the Lyon Collection are on display. Corbett and Yueji Lyon began collecting Australian contemporary art in the 1980s, and today the Lyon Collection holds more than 350 works by artists such as Brook Andrew, Howard Arkley, Patricia Piccinini, Polly Borland, Kathy Temin and Shaun Gladwell. The Lyon Collection has grown into one of the largest and most significant collections of Australian contemporary art within the country.
The Lyon Housemuseum is typically open to the public for pre-booked tours on select days each year. For Open House Weekend, 2020, the Lyon family are opening up their home for a virtual tour led by the architect and founding patron, Corbett Lyon.
