603 Queensberry Street North Melbourne (Originally “State School 307”): Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership

Description

The Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership is an excellent example of architecture encompassing past, present, and future. The Academy’s launch in 2022 at two sites coincides with a celebration of 150 years of public education in Victoria. This heritage-listed building has preserved exteriors and sensitively modified interiors to deliver outstanding professional learning facilities.
603 Queensberry Street, an exemplar of Victorian Gothic Revival style, was designed in the 1880s by architect Henry Bastow who oversaw the construction of more than 600 schools following the introduction of the Education Act in 1872, making Victoria one of the first jurisdictions in the world to offer free, secular and compulsory to all children aged between 6 and 16.
Maddison Architects’ award-winning design preserves the careful limestone, brickwork and render of former State School 307 while incorporating various pedagogical approaches to provide facilities purpose-built spaces – including a 100-seat theatre – to motivate and inspire learning experience.
The Academy delivers a range of professional learning opportunities to Victorian school leaders and highly skilled teachers. Onsite installations showcasing modern professional learning facilities will encourage visitors to learn about the history of the buildings and the history of education in the state of Victoria.
