Old Customs House – Unbuild and Re-Imagine

Description

Jenna Lee is a Gulumerridjin (Larrakia), Wardaman and KarraJarri Saltwater woman with mixed Japanese, Chinese, Filipino and Anglo-Australian ancestry. A multidisciplinary artist, Jenna uses art to explore and celebrate her many overlapping identities. Working primarily across sculpture, installation, and body adornment, Jenna also works with the moving image, photography and projection in the digital medium.
In one of Melbourne’s most important 19th century public buildings, Old Customs House, the program seeks to apply a new lens to the understanding of "Old Customs", centering First People experience at the core of both the space and its utility as Jenna both unbuilds its past use and builds towards a deeper and more connected future to the space.
Old Customs House – Unbuild and Re-Imagine is a hands-on making workshop. Participants will re-purpose (or ‘unbuild’) colonial paper media (place name books, Aboriginal Language dictionaries, maps, newspapers) to create a collective paper flower intervention within the Immigration Museum.

What's On

Participants in this hands-on making workshop throughout the day will re-purpose (or ‘unbuild’) colonial paper mediums (place name books, Aboriginal Language dictionaries, maps, newspapers) to create a collective paper flower intervention within the Immigration Museum.
Interact with artist Jenna Lee as you help ‘build’ an installation which brings nature, First Peoples perspectives and language back into the colonial built environment.
