Description

Described by the National Trust as an “unusual example of Edwardian period architecture”, the former Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court was designed by PWD architect J.B.Cohen with W. Mackay, and opened in April 1900. This redbrick and stucco building with its many intact original features provides an illuminating insight into the functioning of a courthouse in a sleepy rural village that became a busy suburb. Its expanding range of uses during and immediately after WWII, and into the present, reflects the changing nature of our society.

What's On

Visitors will see a refurbished courthouse returned to the colours of its era. Examine the different areas that made up the Old Heidelberg Courthouse which reflect early twentieth century attitudes towards civic justice. Take in a fascinating exhibition on the strong Arts and Crafts heritage of the area as demonstrated through its architecture.
