Open State: Emporium tour
Emporium Melbourne is located on the site of the former Myer Emporium, one of the oldest and best-known shopping destinations in the city. Recent winner of 2016 Victorian Architecture Awards for Commercial Architecture and Designed by The Buchan Group, visitors will tour the current Emporium building, a celebration of new built form whilst retaining its former heritage facades, address and name to keep its sense of history alive.
When re-developing the site architects focused on allowing natural light to penetrate through all levels. This and other features include timber-detailed ceilings as well as polished stone tiles and bluestone accents are reminiscent of the city’s laneways. The media screen on the corner of Swanston and Lonsdale Streets is the biggest of its kind in the southern hemisphere.
