Transforming ANZ’s Gothic Chamber into a 21st-Century Banking Museum
Description
ANZ’s Gothic Bank is considered Australia’s finest secular Gothic-Revival building and is Victoria’s second-most significant heritage listing. Completed in 1887, ANZ’s Gothic Bank houses an ANZ specialist hub and the recently opened banking museum.
Above the bank sits the Verdon Chambers. Comprising 10 rooms of immaculately preserved artwork and ornate features, this site was the former residence of Sir George Verdon, Governor of the English, Scottish & Australian Bank (ES&A).
Recognising the architectural and historical significance of the Gothic Bank in Melbourne’s history, ANZ engaged with interior architects Foolscap Studio and a team of heritage consultants, restoration experts, joiners, engineers, exhibition designers and builders. Together, they reconfigured the banking chamber to incorporate a banking museum while carefully restoring the building and its features for the benefit of generations to come.
