Waterfront: In Time with Water
Join Professor Nigel Bertram (Director, NMBW Architecture Studio), Catherine Murphy (Director of Urban Lab, Monash University) as they engage with a panel of writers and historians on a tour of Melbourne’s Yarra (Birrarung) River, discussing the waterway’s past, present and future.
Nigel and Catherine co-edited the book ‘In Time with Water: Design Studies of 3 Australian Cities‘ (UWA, August 2019), which examines how design processes can assist in understanding the underlying and hybrid nature of water systems in our urban environments to better prepare for climate change and increased density in our urban environments. The tour will provide a fascinating insight into lost landscapes and key considerations for future developments.
Speakers include:
- Rod Giblett: Honorary Associate Professor of Environmental Humanities, Deakin University. A trans-disciplinary researcher and creative writer of fiction and non-fiction in the environmental humanities, Rod is the author of numerous books on Melbourne’s wetlands including the forthcoming Modern Melbourne.
- Anna Hurlimann: Associate Professor in Urban Planning, Melbourne School of Design. Anna’s teaching and research activities focus on issues of environmentally sustainable cities, with a particular research interest in the sustainable management of water resources.
Presented by Open House Melbourne for Waterfront – part of Melbourne Design Week 2020, an initiative of the Victorian Government in collaboration with the NGV.
