Waterfront: Ocean Osmosis – Desal Tour
The Victorian Desalination Project is a rainfall independent source of water capable of supplying up to 150 billion litres of water a year – or about one-third of Melbourne’s annual water consumption. It provides a buffer against future dry conditions by supplementing Melbourne’s existing catchment supplies. The desalination plant comprises 29 buildings on site, marine structures and tunnels, an ecological reserve, and an 84-km two-way underground transfer pipeline and 87-km dedicated underground power line.
The plant and transfer pipeline are operated by Watersure, a Suez and Ventia Utility Services Joint Venture.
Presented by Open House Melbourne and Watersure for Waterfront – part of Melbourne Design Week 2020, an initiative of the Victorian Government in collaboration with the NGV.
