Making Home: Summerhill Village

+ Add to Itinerary

Description

Open House Melbourne presents Making Home, a series of talks and tours that help public audiences better understand social and affordable housing.

Summerhill Village is an innovative, purpose-built social housing project designed for older women to live independently and age in place while enjoying the benefits of community living. Jointly owned by not-for-profit United Housing Co-operative and the Lions Club of Footscray, and delivered as part of Homes Victoria’s Big Housing Build, this thoughtfully-designed medium-density apartment complex is more than just a place to live. Built on co-operative principles, residents become tenant members, sharing in the rights and responsibilities of co-operative living, and are encouraged to actively contribute to the well-being of the community.

The Village comprises one and two bedroom apartments arranged over two and three levels around a central courtyard. Designed by TANDEM Design Studio, the architecture embraces a human-centric approach and innovative construction solutions that are affordable, efficient, and sustainable. The modular design maximises liveability while fitting seamlessly into the suburban context.
