Melbourne's arcades: Examining the details in Melbourne’s historic arcades—Summer Fun(draisers)

+ Add to Itinerary

Description

Join author and GML heritage consultant Kristine Slawinski on a guided walking tour through some of Melbourne's most beautiful and historic city arcades, uncovering the rich stories and intricate details often overlooked in everyday city life.

Drawn from her recently published book 'Melbourne Heritage Interiors', this tour invites participants to slow down and look closely at the craftsmanship, design and social history embedded within these iconic spaces.

Beginning with a short introduction to the history of arcades in Melbourne, the tour will weave through a selection of significant arcades in the CBD. At each stop, Kristine will share a brief history of the arcade before highlighting architectural details, materials and decorative elements, as well as reveal fascinating stories about how these retail and social spaces have been used and adapted over time.

This walking tour is a rare opportunity to experience Melbourne's heritage interiors through an expert lens, building a deeper appreciation for the beauty, history and hidden narratives of the city's arcades.

Brought to you with the generous support of our friends and partners, our Summer Fun(draisers) offer new and special opportunities as well as returning crowd favourites. These intimate, limited capacity talks + tours will take you up close and behind-the-scenes with design experts, all the while making a valued contribution to Open House Melbourne.
