Description

The Boyd Community Hub, located in Southbank, is a blend of Melbourne’s history and community spirit. Opened in 1885 as a state school, it is one of the most significant 19th-century school buildings in the city. With a bequest from grazier James Hill Boyd, the building became a domestic science school for girls, giving it its name.

In the late 20th century, the building served as a TAFE and university campus before being acquired by the City of Melbourne in 2007. Today, the space is a vibrant community destination, offering opportunities for people to connect, learn, and create. It houses the Southbank Library, providing access to books, workshops, and educational programs, and offers services like maternal child health and playgroups. Additional creative spaces support prominent artists, contributing to the area’s cultural vibrancy.

The Boyd Community Hub is also home to a thriving community garden and is adjacent to Boyd Park. As Boyd Village develops, the area will continue to serve as a gathering place for residents and visitors. This dynamic space is where history, culture, and community come together to shape the future of Southbank.
