Central Park Conservatory

+ Add to Itinerary

Presented by: City of Stonnington

Description

The Central Park Conservatory is of historical significance as one of the oldest and largest extant public conservatories in Victoria. Only two other public conservatories comparable to that at Central Park exist in the state: the Rosalind Park conservatory at Bendigo, constructed in 1897, (with extensive alterations undertaken in 1978); and the conservatory in the Fitzroy gardens, which was constructed in 1930. Several other public conservatories have been demolished, making the Central Park Conservatory now a rare example of this kind of structure.

The Central Park conservatory today displays interesting and rare orchids on the wings, managed and maintained by the Orchid Club. The middle of the conservatory displays general indoor plants.

What's On

A member of council and a member of the Orchid Club will demonstrate and discuss orchids including very rare varieties. Presenters will also discuss the history and prominent features of the building.
