Latrobe City Commercial Landfill Facility and PineGro

+ Add to Itinerary

Description

Come see an overview of how your household waste is processed in Latrobe City. A modern landfill is a carefully constructed and managed facility incorporating many environmental protection measures. Visit our commercial landfill facility that takes household waste from several councils and learn how it is managed to minimise environmental impacts. See the onsite biogas-powered generator that produces enough electricity to offset the council’s electricity consumption by 80%.

At Pinegro Products you will see the new purpose-built composting facility that processes your Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) into high quality compost. You will learn about the importance of correctly sorting of your organic materials, how the process works and see the final product. This is a rare opportunity to see behind the scenes and learn about the work that goes into managing your household waste.

What's On

The first stop on this coach-based tour is at the landfill. See what goes into the design and operation of a large-scale commercial landfill—a complex process that balances environmental requirements and maximum efficiency.

We will take the coach to see the active landfill cell and observe the biogas electricity generator. We also briefly explain what happens to your recycling after collection.

At Pinegro we follow the composting process once the contents of your FOGO bin arrive, from sorting through to composting and maturation of the final compost product. See the sorting shed and composting chambers and learn how the compost is sorted and graded.
