Welcome to Whitehorse

Welcome to The Weekend in the City of Whitehorse – eat, drink and explore your way through this dynamic and varied part of town.

Start with a visit to the unique, vibrant hub that is the Box Hill Community Arts Centre, the first building of its kind in Australia. Take a guided tour of this much-loved space or sign the kids up for one of three hands-on, creative workshops.

Nearby at Box Hill Town Hall, take a guided tour of the historic Old Council Chambers (the location for many great Australian film and television moments) and the grand main hall, plus the Whitehorse Artspace Gallery and community hub which houses 17 local not-for-profit organisations.

You’ll love wandering through Box Hill Gardens, especially if you have little ones with some extra energy to burn off, plus lunch at the Roast Duck Inn or The Penny Drop, or there are plenty of food options at nearby Box Hill Central.

At The Round – Whitehorse Performing Arts Centre, join BKK Architects and Kerstin Thompson Architects for a tour of this dynamic creative space, integrating architecture, landscape, ecology and infrastructure. Enjoy a treat onsite Mr Robertson Café and Mitcham Social are good options not too far away for lunch or a snack. If you want to join the panel discussion, scoot this listing to the start of your Saturday!

A little further east, visit the Strathdon House and Orchard Precinct described as Whitehorse City Council’s best kept secret. With a history dating back to the 1890s, the precinct has recently been redeveloped by architects Lovell Chen. Tours will be held across the weekend showcasing this amazing multi-use space (and you’ll want to try the scones!).

Further east again, Schwerkolt Cottage and Museum is a historic museum complex surrounded by bushland. Tour the 19-century stone cottage, and walk through the barn, smithy, smokehouse, cellar and orcharding shed. The family will love watching demonstrations by the Needlework Tapestry Guild of Victoria and the Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking.

If you’d like to stretch your legs, Schwerkolt Cottage adjoins the Yarran Dheran Nature Reserve with beautiful walking and cycling paths along the Mullum Mullum Creek.

If you can snag a booking, Wildwood House is the only remaining home designed by famed architect Robin Boyd during his partnership with Frederick Romberg in the City of Whitehorse. Be guided through the mid-centry features of this significant piece of architecture by architectural photographer and filmmaker (and homeowner) Veeral Patel.

There’s a little something for everyone in the City of Whitehorse over The Weekend – enjoy! To engage with the precinct into the future, head to the Whitehorse What’s On page.
