Ballarat Integrated Regional Cancer Centre

Architect: Billard Leece Partnership, 2013

Building Description

The Ballarat Integrated Regional Cancer Centre is a calming, patient-focused facility designed to reduce the physical and emotional strain of cancer treatment for patients and their families. This ambulatory facility supports a multidisciplinary collaborative approach to patient care. The Centre provides the latest technology for cancer treatment supported by a radiotherapy facility, Medical Oncology Unit, a satellite pharmacy—ensuring immediate access to medication and treatments—and a multidisciplinary consultation suite supporting the concept of a ‘one-stop shop’ for patients and their families. The interiors were purposely designed to be warm and uplifting. Natural timbers line the walls reducing noise, while a sculpted roof and ceiling draw in natural light to provide a peaceful and calming environment. Radiation bunkers were also designed to be less imposing with a floral ceiling pattern that can be lit up in a variety of ways to calm patients during treatment. Education and administrative spaces encourage collaboration, and support research with a Clinical Trials Unit closely aligned to treatment spaces. A Wellness Centre is included where all those involved in the patient journey can access amenities that offer a break from routine clinical spaces.
