The Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership is an excellent example of architectural past, present, and future. The interiors of the heritage-listed building with preserved exteriors have been sensitively modified to deliver outstanding professional learning facilities.
The Academy’s main location, 41 St Andrews Place, sits in the heart of Melbourne’s Treasury Precinct. It was originally built in the 1850s as the Victorian Government Printing Office.
Architect DesignInc worked closely with the Academy and a reference group of school principals to design a timeless experience with an emphasis on natural colours and lighting. Three floors connect via a handmade wooden stair in the centre of the building, with an indoor garden on the ground floor and a large skylight directly above emphasising the vertical narrative of the building. While the heritage bluestone is preserved to offer a window to the past.
The Academy’s launch in 2022 coincides with a celebration of 150 years of public education in Victoria. The Education Act 1872 made Victoria one of the first jurisdictions in the world to offer free, secular and compulsory to all children aged between 6 and 16.
The Academy delivers a range of professional learning opportunities to Victorian school leaders and highly skilled teachers.
