Armadale House

Neeson Murcutt Neille: Stephen Neille, Rachel Neeson, David Coleborne and Ben Dixon (architecture). Fiona Brockhoff Design (landscape architecture) 2023.

Description

Armadale House is the renovation of a gracious, free-standing two-storey Victorian house, located within a conservation area.

Already a large house, the brief was about refining the space for occupation, light and the landscape. The interventions were targeted and strategic, contained largely within the existing footprint. Alterations and additions were used as opportunities to re-order the parti—and therefore the plan and section— to create a cohesive, beautiful setting for domestic life.

The original house's extraordinary qualities include its thick walls, high skirtings and soaring ceiling heights. A relationship with nature was fundamental in helping the garden to work in unison with the architecture.

Armadale House was awarded the 2023 Australian Institute of Architects Award for Residential Architecture Houses (Alterations and Additions) for Victoria, and the 2023 Houses Award for House Alteration and Addition over 200m2 .

What's On

The architect will take the audience on a walking tour of the house and gardens, sharing the process of designing and realising the house. The audience is welcome to walk through the entire house asking questions as needed.
