Discover the story of Melbourne with a unique opportunity to visit Como House. Known by many Melburnians as ‘the white house on the hill,’ Como overlooks the Birrurung (Yarra) river and is surrounded by a pleasure garden and community parkland.
Como House is an atmospheric town mansion presented as a family home. Built in 1847, Como House is an unusual mix of Australian Regency and classic Italianate architecture. The interiors reflect the tastes and style of the Armytages, who resided there for 95 years and considered it an 'oasis'. The garden has retained many elements of its 1850s design.
Since colonisation, Como has changed with Melbourne, reflecting the booms and busts of Victoria’s history. Como was a home but also a place of work, and the original servants’ quarters are preserved. It was the first house museum in Australia acquired with furniture, domestic technology and decorative arts. Leila Armytage called her home ‘the last remaining oasis.’ Enjoy this unique opportunity
What's On
Usually only accessible via a guided tour, Como House is open to the public for only one day per year for visitors to enjoy and explore at their leisure.

Please meet at the entrance of Como House. Entry is through the front door. There is no on-site parking, however there is street parking available but it is limited. It is recommended to come via public transport on the 58 tram or 603 bus.
No food or drinks inside the house. Large bags and backpacks to be left at the front door. No touching of any walls or objects inside the house.

Como House is a two-storey building with the second storey only accessible via a staircase.
Parking is available in the streets surrounding Como House.
