Melbourne's long-standing reputation for liveability has recently seen a modest decline in global rankings. This shift invites a reflection on the current state of design: have we become too focused on building performance, optimisation, and appearance, and not enough on how buildings respond to their surroundings or contribute back to the city?

The program explores how cross-industry disciplines collectively can drive a more holistic approach to urban generosity. By interrogating spatial and socio-economic contributions alongside technical environmental performance, the session looks beyond buildings as isolated assets to see them as key participants in Melbourne's regenerative future.

What's On

Organised by the Sustainable Architecture Committee of the Australian Institute of Architects, this session discusses the relationship between people, the city, and the built environment, inviting the public to consider how buildings can move from being individual objects to a network of contributions to the urban fabric.

Through a discussion with industry experts on the current direction of urban development, attendees will gain a robust framework for evaluating the city - considering a building not just by its baseline metrics, but by its lasting contribution to a shared urban life.
