Greville Street and Grattan Gardens Prahran

Rush Wright Associates 2018

Description

Greville Street has changed character considerably over time. Its early history included uses in clothing manufacture and then fashion. In the 1980s the street became known as a place to score hard drugs, and changed little until the 1990s when the Grattan Gardens design by landscape architects Taylor Cullity Lethlean emerged. The scheme included the water feature known as Memory Pond by Robert Owen, a series of shining discs incorporating water jets.

The work was carefully retained in the latest award-winning design by Rush Wright Associates, and Memory Pond now has special significance on Greville. The new design restores the integrity of Grattan Gardens, which had lost the Edwardian charm of its creators, and the sense of a designed landscape created from plants, with a civic garden paying direct reference to local history, forms and materials.

This project is the first built outcome from the City of Stonnington's Chapel Street Masterplan. The work invests city capital in the small network of streets west of Chapel Street and was pivotal to enabling traffic movements to nearby Prahran Square, designed by Lyons and Aspect Studios.

What's On

Join us for a walking tour led by key design team members, all of whom worked on the project for the City of Stonnington.

Children's Activities

Hopefully the very safe water feature by artist Robert Owen will be on, and children can engage with that…. so bring a towel!
