Marking the library’s 170th anniversary in 2026, this tour will reveal how careful renewal and contemporary additions have allowed the building to keep giving more back to more people, year after year.
Moving through key public areas, you’ll see how design decisions—from entryways and lighting to acoustics and furniture—support a remarkable diversity of users: children and families, students and researchers, tourists and people who rely on the library as a safe civic space. Along the way, the architects behind its revitalisation will explain how heritage fabric and new architecture work together to make the library more open and inclusive while still honouring and celebrating its historic character.
