Old Gippstown
Description
Old Gippstown Heritage Park is an open-air museum in Moe, set on 8 acres of parkland, that preserves and displays buildings and artefacts from Gippsland’s past.
The park features a collection of 30 original relocated buildings, dating from the 1840s to the 1930s, that offer insight into how people lived, worked and built in regional Victoria.
Included in those 30 original buildings are three very important examples of how architectural design was used to meet the current needs and resources of the time. From Bushy Park homestead, a typical early settler timber structure of the 1840s; to Loren, a rare prefabricated iron house imported from England for the housing shortage of the gold rush era of the 1850s; to Yallourn House from the 1930s planned township designed by the State Electricity Commission for its employees.
Explore these three structures, and many more, to see how building design in Gippsland evolved from prefabrication and functional construction to planned community housing. Together, these buildings illustrate the evolution of domestic architecture shaped by changing technologies, industries and ways of life.
