Swingin' St Kilda: Swing and Big Bands
Description
Music has always been a vital ingredient of St Kilda's popularity as a destination. St Kilda might be known for being where Australia’s punk scene began in the late 1970s, but decades before that, swing and big band music also exploded on its shores. Kicked off by American troops bringing their partying ways and music with them during the war years, these styles of music found a home in St Kilda, thanks to the area's established reputation as an entertainment precinct with great venues.
What's On
Join St Kilda music historian Sally Moore and the lead singer of legendary rock band Painters and Dockers, music journalist and author Paulie Stewart on a journey into the swing and big band music era.
We’ll take you to venues and other sites where the swing and big band scene took off. Stories and stops will include MEMO Music Hall, St Kilda Army and Navy Club, Jazz Centre 44, the Galleon, Telefil Recording Studios, the Peanut Farm, O'Donnell Gardens and finishing up at St Kilda Sports Club with a special guest speaker!
