Temporary architecture and the visioning of our cities
How temporary architecture provides a public space for exchange and exploration
Temporary architecture is becoming more of a part of our city’s fabric, from Joost Bakker’s Greenhouse in 2008 to annual installations such as MPavilion, the NGV Summer Pavilion, and festival hubs including Melbourne Knowledge Week.
This discussion will look at the power of temporary architecture as inclusive public-engagement spaces, and cultural laboratories, as well as the role it can play in helping to vision the future of our cities.
Sam Redston, Executive Director of MPavilion, Dr Fiona Gray, Manager Central Geelong and Waterfront for City of Greater Geelong, Andrew Mackenzie, Director of Uro Publications, and Pamela McGirr, Associate of Grimshaw will explore how temporary architecture provokes thought and curiosity, and provides a platform for the rapid sharing of ideas, responses to issues and a citizen-led approach to change.
And does temporary architecture enrich our society? What is the value of temporary architecture and how does it contribute to Melbourne’s reputation as the world’s most liveable city?
