Building Description
The Victorian Pride Centre is Australia’s first purpose-built LGBTIQ+ Centre.
Opening in July 2021 in Melbourne’s bayside tourism precinct St Kilda, the seven story Victorian Pride Centre is home to 15 LGBTIQ+ organisations, a meeting space for LGBTIQ+ clubs and groups and a cultural and social hub with a theatrette, gallery, rooftop event space and bars.
Key design themes mesh the purpose of the building with the building’s architectural intent:
Collaboration
The architectural design intent is an iconic building in keeping with the Moorish design of many of St Kilda’s historic buildings. Designed on the principles of a beehive with the elliptical openings suggestive of a honeycomb cut on different angles, the building enables collaboration.
Strength and permanence
The LGBTIQ+ community is strong and has fought for recognition and place. The formal and spatial clarity of the concrete armature of the building convey permanence and resilience, depicting a building that has been there forever and will be there forever.
Evolution and emergence
While we respect and honour our history, the building design reflects and promotes the continuing evolution and emergence of LGBTIQ+ communities. Some design elements have an unfinished look about them, reflecting organic growth and evolution.
