Wurun Senior Campus tours

GHDWoodhead and Grimshaw 2022

Description

Wurun Senior Campus is a new, highly sustainable, award-wining vertical campus that brings together two existing high schools to accommodate over 650 students.

Constructed as part of the regeneration of the historic Fitzroy Gasworks precinct in Melbourne’s inner north, the building folds around a prominent corner site so it may integrate with the precinct’s future sports complex. The design takes advantage of this positioning, with the building form stepping up along its length to create landscaped terraces and an abundance of outdoor space.

Each terrace allows direct connection to interior learning environments to promote a diverse pedagogical offering and health and wellbeing thanks to optimal natural light, airflow, views and recreation spaces.

A multi-purpose atrium forms the campus heart and provides a flexible gathering space from which each of the six levels, or learning precincts, may be accessed. To enhance this connection, a coloured internal laneway winds up through the building, with stairs positioned in multi-level voids to emphasise visibility and enable clear wayfinding.

Designed to help equip students with building 21st-century skills, spaces are highly flexible, adaptable and technology rich. Together, they form an experiential learning landscape and foster a contemporary approach to pedagogy and interdisciplinary learning.
