Birrarung Floating Wetlands
+ Add to ItineraryDescription
Two years after their installation, the Floating Wetlands along the Yarra River continue to support urban biodiversity and enhance Melbourne’s River health.
Join wetland specialists and ecologists to explore these interlocking floating platforms featuring hundreds of native aquatic plants, supporting breeding birds, ducks and other wildlife. Funded by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, this initiative informs the Greenline Project’s broader ecological strategy for Melbourne’s riverfront.
You will be shown how this project has been contributing to enhance the river system's health and improve the experience of our city landscapes, as well as inform the overall design of the Greenline Project.
The wetlands are made from a series of interlocking platforms that are placed on the water and securely anchored to the riverbed. These platforms feature hundreds of young native and indigenous plants, which attract birds and other wildlife that inhabit the river.
