Christ Church Grammar School Memorial Hall
+ Add to ItineraryDescription
The restoration and refurbishment of the 1920s Memorial Hall at Christ Church Grammar School thoughtfully preserves the rich history and Gothic Revival features while enhancing the multi-purpose functionality of the building.
All elements of the original timber trusses, sandstone corbels, proscenium arch, distinctive windows and war memorial honouring members of the parish serving in WW1 have been restored and incorporated seamlessly. The original timber floor has been completely restored, revealing its natural beauty after 50 years of wear and line marking as a makeshift basketball court.
Awarded the 2024 Victorian AIA Architecture Award for Heritage Architecture—Creative Adaptation and a Commendation for Public Design in the 2024 Australian Interior Design Awards, the refurbishment has delivered a remarkable, timeless mixed-use space for students and the wider Christ Church Grammar community.
What's On
Guests are invited to explore the beautiful 1920s hall and see how the space has been restored and modernised, ensuring both old and new histories can be read in unison.
Marvel at the restored ceiling trusses, decorative corbels and original proscenium stage arch, observe how the timber acoustic panels contrast the original brickwork while providing a sense of warmth and familiarity, and take in the impressive transformation from above in the upper balcony.
Architects will be on hand to answer questions and share insights into the unique features of the space and how the design evolved.
