Gasworks Arts Park
+ Add to ItineraryDescription
The South Melbourne Gas Plant was built in 1872 and operated 24 hours a day until it closed in 1957.
In 1986 the industrial buildings were transformed into an inner urban gathering place for creative minds: home to two theatres, three gallery spaces, studios for 15 resident artists and workshop venues.
Gasworks Arts Park is now a vibrant arts precinct, on the site of the former South Melbourne Gas Plant situated in Albert Park, just three kilometres from the CBD. The precinct is nestled in four hectares of park with the buildings housing two theatres, three gallery spaces, a café, as well as function and workshop spaces.
Gasworks has sixteen resident artists who work from studios that were originally workshops for the South Melbourne Gas Works and we invite everyone to come and see how these old utilitarian buildings have been re-purposed to become places of creativity.
