Matchbox Gallery

Description

The Matchbox building was built around 1898 and had a number of tenants over the decades. When purchased in 1994, it was run down and used as a bric-a-brac business. Locals were worried the new owner would demolish the building.

Instead, a studio was built at the back of the property where it was used as a leadlight studio and workshop. The main building was renovated and completed in 1999, when the first inaugural exhibition was celebrated.

Since then, the Matchbox Gallery building has been heritage listed and become an icon in the Main Street of Yinnar. It served as a gallery for ten years before becoming an accomodation business for another ten years.

In 2021, when Covid-19 raised its head, the owners decided to revert the space back to an art gallery to follow their original passion as artists, and support professional and amateur art lovers and create a place just for people to drop in and enjoy the art and the atmosphere it brings.

What's On

Resident artist Marie Ward and guest artist Michelle Evans will be present to work on their projects. They will only be too happy to share their knowledge as they cover a broad range of skills in all areas of the arts.

The will be an exhibition of finished and unfinished works so viewers can have an understanding of what's involved. Matchbox Gallery owner Pip Nikodemski will be in his back leadlight studio/gallery working a leadlight panel, and will demonstrate and answer any questions as he has thirty eight years of experience in leadlighting and running workshops.
