Metro Tunnel: Anzac Station

+ Add to Itinerary

Presented by: Metro Tunnel Project

Description

Anzac Station is one of five new underground train stations for the Metro Tunnel Project that will become new Melbourne landmarks and transform how people move around the city.

It exemplifies the design principles that have guided the stations' architecture: openness, authenticity, integration between the above- and below-ground realms, connection to nature and First Nations culture and a unique identity that responds to the history and character of its place.

It’s designed as a 'pavilion in the park' that blends into its leafy surrounds and draws natural light underground into the station concourse. The station’s distinctive timber canopy is 85 metres long and 23 metres wide. Its 13 timber cross beams—weighing around 4,500kg each—sit on massive steel support columns up to 17 metres above the station concourse.  The station features the major artworks Future Wall Painting by contemporary Melbourne artist Raafat Ishak and Wartime Carrier Pigeons by contemporary Australian artist Fiona Hall on the concourse and Tracks by pre-eminent First Nations artist Maree Clarke on the station platform.

The station will allow people to catch a train for the first time to St Kilda Road’s growing employment and residential precinct, the Shrine of Remembrance, Royal Botanic Gardens and Albert Park.
