Running alongside the Moe railway line, the Moe Rail Precinct has transformed a once-overlooked corridor into a vibrant civic space shaped by and for its community.

First envisioned in 2010, the project reimagines this stretch of George Street as a place for gathering, play and everyday connection in the heart of the Latrobe Valley. Building on the success of the adjoining library and community centre, the precinct now includes a diverse mix of outdoor spaces. A playground, skate park, event lawn, communal BBQ area and flexible seating encourage people to linger, while integrated lighting supports a growing program of community events.

At its centre, the skate park caters to all skill levels, from a beginner-friendly street zone to a three-metre bowl and quarter pipe for experienced riders. A bold graphic surface, inspired by the flowing forms of the Latrobe River, unifies the space. Nearby, the playground sits right next to the railway, allowing children to play alongside the rhythm of passing trains just like in the book The Little Crooked House.

Developed through close collaboration between local government, designers and the community, the precinct reflects a shared ambition for an inclusive public space. Since opening, it has revitalised George Street, fostering local pride and becoming a recognised regional destination that has won awards, including Regional Achievement Award at the 2024 AILA Victoria Landscape Architecture Awards.
