Russian House
+ Add to ItineraryDescription
Built in 1884, the Russian House is a superb Victorian-era building that stands as a local heritage landmark.
Originally constructed as the Fitzroy and Collingwood Friendly Society's Dispensary, it showcases an exquisite blend of Italian Renaissance and Classical architectural styles. The two-story facade is distinctly divided, with the first level reflecting the grandeur of traditional Italian Renaissance masterpieces, while the second level, adorned with decorative columns and elegant window headers, evokes classic European architecture.
Remarkably well-preserved, this eclectic gem remains an outstanding feature of Greeves and Gore Street, as well as the wider Fitzroy area.
What's On
Immerse yourself in a theatrical guided tour through the Russian House that will tell the story of this nearly 150-year building and the Russian community who have called it home for more than 60 years.
Travel in time as far back as the nineteenth century to witness the history of this part of the city. Learn about the original purpose of the building, which was created to be a dispensary. Meet the most significant characters of the early Russian community who purchased the building in the 1960s, or learn folk dances.
This unique, immersive experience will allow visitors to speak with historical figures connected to the building and Fitzroy and imagine what their lives looked like.
Children's Activities
This event is child-friendly, but children will need to be accompanied by their parents to be able to participate in the interactive performance.
