Readings Chadstone

+ Add to Itinerary

Presented by: Kerstin Thompson Architects

Description

Readings bookstore is situated in the new Market Pavilion precinct of Chadstone. The design concept aims to encourage browsing and reading, a space for customers to take in a quiet moment amidst a busy shopping expedition.

In this project KTA has experimented with dematerialisation (working with less) and responsible sourcing of materials. Our response to the store layout offers adaptability to support various modes of function and display with minimal set up effort. A modular approach means that elements of the store can be disassembled easily, ensuring materials can also be reused and adapted over time. A centrepiece in the store includes a bespoke 23 x 3.4-metre suspended paper lantern, constructed from recycled paper from books not suitable for sale and made in collaboration with Edward Linacre Studio, Ambience Lighting and KTA.

What's On

Sarah Cooper, associate at KTA and the project lead, will give a series of short talks focused on the design concepts steering the new Readings bookstore; including principles of re-use and modular flexibility to support different modes of use/display. Sarah will also provide insight into the development of the store’s bespoke lantern, made from recycled paper, in collaboration with Edward Linacre Studio and Ambience Lighting. Following the talk, visitors will be invited to wander through the store at their own pace.
