This part of Melbourne holds rich traditions for the Wurundjeri and Bunurong people who have occupied this area for millennia. As an exclusive pocket of development close to the city, this precinct reflects a remarkable architectural legacy—with representative examples of the work of many eminent architects and landscape designers. Its diverse streetscapes feature outstanding heritage buildings from mid-Victorian to modernist styles.
South Yarra was home to architect, writer, critic and educator Robin Boyd, who designed his own iconic family home here in the late 1950s, and many more renowned buildings in the area.
Led by experts from GML Heritage and the Robin Boyd Foundation, the tour provides a snapshot of the suburb’s diverse built heritage—from early residences, to commercial, industrial, and community landmarks, and modern experiments in housing to reveal the precinct’s architectural excellence, heritage-listed buildings and the stories behind them. Join us to experience the architecture, history, and stories that define one of Melbourne’s most iconic suburbs.
