Werribee Open Range Zoo Expansion
+ Add to ItineraryDescription
In November 2020, the Victorian State Government announced an $88 million investment in the expansion of Werribee Open Range Zoo, enabling Zoos Victoria to create a cutting-edge environment for both animals and visitors. This visionary project features the development of a world-class 21-hectare Elephant Habitat, designed to accommodate the zoo’s growing multigenerational herd. With six unique habitats, two expansive mega pools, a bull barn and a herd barn, the new elephant home offers an environment tailored to meet the complex needs of elephants, including larger spaces for roaming, foraging, and socialising.
In partnership with Development Victoria and TCL, one of Australia’s most prestigious landscape architecture firms, the Elephant Habitat showcases innovative, environmentally-responsible design. The habitat adheres to global standards in animal welfare and research, setting a benchmark for ethical animal care. This project also contributes to advancing the understanding of elephant behaviour, providing a sustainable, immersive experience for both the animals and the public.
What's On
