Yan Yean Reservoir Park: Beyond the Tap

+ Add to Itinerary

Description

Come explore Yan Yean Reservoir and learn about its history, engineering, and ongoing role in the city's water management system. Our aim is to provide an educational and engaging experience for visitors, highlight the historical and architectural significance of Yan Yean Cottage and foster appreciation for Melbourne’s early water supply infrastructure. Gain an overview of the process of Integrated Water Management and learn more about the significance of the surrounding landscape, biodiversity and wildlife, and the value of waterway catchments and supply.

What's On

Join us on one of our guided tours or join the educational activities in the central marquees!

Friends of Yan Yean will give a 30-minute guided historical tour of the heritage-listed Caretaker's Cottage and the surrounding grounds. The tour will include displays of historical photographs, documents and artefacts.

You can also join a pre-booked 60-minute guided tour of the Yan Yean Reservoir Catchment. Walk through the reservoir grounds and hear an explanation of the reservoir’s engineering and architecture. Significant environmental features, including wildlife, will also be highlighted.

There will be interactive Q&A sessions throughout the day. This is a great opportunity for visitors to learn more about modern-day operations and maintenance of the water supply system, and ask questions about the reservoir.

There will also be environmental and sustainability talks throughout day, with information on the environmental significance of the reservoir and a discussion about sustainable water management practices.

Children's Activities

There will be an interactive catchment model demonstrating how water cycles through the catchment.
