Getting to East Gippsland – Our handy guide

Posted Fri 5th Mar 2021 | Helen Sweatman

This Easter we’re taking Waterfront to the picturesque East Gippsland region, and we can’t wait for you to join us!

Our dedicated East Gippsland Waterfront program will be presented from 30 March — 5 April. There are many ways to travel to and from the region. Here are a few tips:

GETTING THERE BY CAR

The quickest way to get to East Gippsland from Melbourne by car is to travel south-east along the Monash Freeway and then take the M1 (Princes Highway) through many of central Gippsland’s cities and townships, including Warragul, Morwell, Traralgon, Bairnsdale and on to Lakes Entrance.

Alternatively, take the South Gippsland Highway, which runs closer to the coast through Korumburra, Leongatha and Foster before joining the Princes Highway at Sale.

GETTING THERE VIA PUBLIC TRANSPORT

For a very scenic train ride, V/Line operates rail services to the region on the Gippsland line, terminating at either Traralgon or Bairnsdale (with bus connection to Lakes Entrance). The train to Bairnsdale takes just shy of 4 hours, with regular connecting coaches to take you to Kalmina West, Lakes Entrance, Lake Tyers or beyond. The region is also serviced by daily buses from Melbourne, departing from the Southern Cross Coach Terminal. To plan your journey, visit the V/Line website.

Please note, V/Line requires passengers to wear a face mask for their entire journey.

To make the most of our dedicated East Gippsland Waterfront program we recommend spending a few nights in the region, there are a diverse range of accommodation options which can be booked via visiteastgippsland.com.au.
