Archier Studio, Hardwick Building

Architect: HW & FB Tompkins 1908, Archier 2017

North | N02

Building Description

The Hardwick Building on Sydney Road Brunswick, was designed by Myer Melbourne Architects HW & FB Tompkins and was the first steel-constructed building in Victoria. Iconic since its construction in 1908 it is an important example of American Romanesque Architecture. Originally the Hooper’s Department Store, the building has undergone many different occupations over the last 110 years including wedding-dress makers, Hardwick Bridal, and most recently the creative home to over eight creative studios. Archier Studio is an open plan space which includes its own architectural practice, as well as some hot desks for other independent design professionals who share the space. The studio operates with individual desk carrels and communal spaces for co-working and client meetings. The lease was taken in 2016 with a bare 120sqm space for Archier to make their own. The space was designed and crafted by the staff, with all hands on deck.
