Building Description

Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) hosts over 1,000 events and more than one million visitors every year. The Exhibition Centre, fondly known as “Jeff’s Shed” consists of 40,000 square metres of pillarless exhibition space. This year the Convention Centre celebrates 10 years since opening. Featuring a 5,000 seat Plenary theatre, the building has a wonderful connection to Melbourne with its architectural design reflecting iconic Melbourne landmarks and events including: the MCG, Spring Racing Carnival, and throwbacks to South Wharf’s maritime history. The newly opened expansion showcases a modern day approach to design, boasting flexible event spaces and vibrant public spaces. The gold colour of the expansion’s exterior culminated in Victoria’s goldfields becoming the theme from which names would be drawn. From the Goldfields Theatre, Sovereign Room, Eureka Rooms and Goldfields Café and Bar, the names link to the goldfields of Victoria’s past having been a place for people to gather along with a period of new opportunities, ideas, prosperity and grandeur. As part of Open House Melbourne, MCEC will be opening its doors to the public with pre-scheduled tours through its front and back of house spaces.
