Building Description

Located in the heart of Fitzroy, St Mary’s House of Welcome is an Open Access Centre for people who are experiencing homelessness, social isolation, and mental health issues. St Mary’s House of Welcome was designed in 2009 by Six Degrees Architects. Behind the heritage listed façade, the building is a light-filled, contemporary space. The award winning architectural design provides a welcoming and comfortable place for disadvantaged people. Facilities include a commercial kitchen that serves over 42,000 meals per year, showers, activities rooms and office space. With large glass walls, most areas downstairs enjoy a view of the courtyard garden – a relaxing oasis hidden from the street view. Prior to the renovation, the building was largely unchanged since its humble beginnings in the 1960s as a soup kitchen run by the Daughters of Charity. When clients first saw the redevelopment, one person said, “Is this really for us?” They couldn’t believe that the spectacular building had been created for their use and enjoyment. Visitors can expect to see a unique part of Melbourne’s history – a centre which began almost 60 years ago which, while adapting to current imperatives, continues the same work today.
