Valiant House

Building Description
Valiant House is a contemporary transformation to the much-loved workers cottage. Characteristically dark and narrow, with a rear bathroom providing the only view outside, the original house has been reimagined into a light-filled two-storey home to support comfortable family living.
Situated on the smallest block in a narrow street, the house has been redesigned to suit a growing family, with space and flexibility in mind. A key challenge was to inject light and openness into the compact inner-city block. High ceilings, light wells, skylights and a connection to the once closed-off rear garden dominate the new home.
A celebration of old and new, the original front has been completely retained, with the old glue, cracks and nails of the brick boundary walls retained under a new coat of paint. The back of the house features one large open space that stretches the full width of the site. An innovative central timber-clad “box” cleverly controls circulation within the open plan rear, while seamlessly integrating all storage, appliances, and even the family bathroom.
